Columbia University Libraries established Copyright Advisory Services as the Copyright Advisory Office in 2008 s a means of addressing burgeoning issues surrounding the use of scholarly materials by faculty and students in the course of research, teaching and communicating scholarship.  Since its inception, Columbia University's Copyright Advisory Services has acted as an anchor by providing awareness and education about copyright to the greater scholarly community.

Rina Elster Pantalony was appointed in the fall of 2014 as the Director of the Copyright Advisory Office, bringing significant experience in rights management to this Office.  It underwent a name change to Copyright Advisory Services in 2017. The mandate of Copyright Advisory Services is to assist faculty and students in idenfying and managing their copyrights and to assist the University in managing and understanding copyright issues strategically.  A summary of a three year Strategic Plan and her biography can be reviewed at the following links:
