Take-Down Notices

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 provides an Online Service Provider (OSP) or carrier of digital information with an exemption from copyright liability resulting from the content transmitted by a user of the provider’s or carrier’s system. However, in order to be exempt, the OSP or carrier must act expeditiously to remove or disable access to infringing material as identified in a formal notice by a copyright holder, and must comply with further detailed requirements in the Copyright Act.

In response to this exemption, Columbia University has implemented a policy to address copyright infringement issues. For the policy, see: http://www.columbia.edu/cu/policy/copyright.html
